COACHING SESSION: 1V1 DEFENDING 3

1) The Red defender plays the ball into the Yellow attacker.

2) Yellow, controls and aims to cross over the halfway line to try and beat the defender to get a shot in on goal.

3) Here, Yellow manages to create space for the shot which the defender successfully blocks. Red now joins the group of attackers and Yellow joins the defending group and the sessions continues.

Organisation:

- Group of defenders & attackers.
- Small designated area, here we use a 50m x 25m area with a normal sized goal.

Variations:

- Change the approach angles and original starting positions of both attackers and defenders so they can experience defending from different angles.
- Add extra attackers or defenders.
- Click here to see variation 1 & variation 2.

Tips:

- The defender must close down the attacker as quickly as possible, delay and force him away from goal reduce his possibilities. Defending techniques such as approach, marking, delay, pressing, forcing him onto weaker foot and tackling should all be carefully observed.
- Make sure the initial pass offers the attacker an opportunity to attack.
