MATCH ANALYSIS: MARSEILLE v BASTIA (12/01/02) - GOAL ALFONSO
 

1) The ball is unsuccessfully cleared from a deep defensive position and possession is lost.

2 ) The Marseille player immediately passes to his team-mate in space on the wing.

3) The ball is quickly crossed in to Alfonso who by timing his run to perfection, gets in front of the defender and scores.

Conclusions:

- This is a good example of turning regained possession into immediate attack by playing the ball back in early. Also demonstrates the importance of attackers timing their runs and being first to the ball.
- Shows importance of good clearances - finding touch and gaining time. The player who crosses is not closed down quickly enough and the central defender marking Alfonso is beaten to the cross, perhaps showing a lack of anticipation or is guilty of ball-watching.
